During the Holiday Season it is not uncommon to hear job seekers say they are going to put the brakes on their job search. I hear many coaching clients tell me, “I know nothing gets done in December so I am going to wait until January to start looking for a job.” Nothing is farther from the truth. Just view this recent article from Matter Communications. I’ll dispel the myth and give you 4 reasons why this is a great time to be looking for your next job.
- Companies are gearing up for the New Year. Many companies begin their fiscal year on January 1st. They have hiring budgets in place now and because most jobs take 90 days to fill they are cranking up their candidate searches now.
- Retail soars. If you are in retail, this can be your best shot at a new job. Particularly if you are willing to start out as a temporary employee. If you are excellent at what you do and display a solid work ethic you stand a good chance of being hired after the holiday rush.
- Less supply means you win. Because many people stop looking for work during this time of year, you have less competition. With fewer qualified applicants in the market this is the best time of year to look for a new job.
- More networking opportunities. We all know networking is the number one way to find a job. During the holidays you will have many more opportunities to socialize at holiday events and have the chance to talk to people who can provide job leads. Don’t ignore the potential of holiday parties to jump start your job search.
