I hear many clients say they are going to put the brakes on their job search during the Holidays. They say, “Companies aren’t doing any hiring this time of year, right?” Wrong! There are several compelling reasons why you should be ramping up your job search right now.
Companies need to spend 4th quarter budgets
People assume their chances of getting hired between Thanksgiving and the New Year are next to nothing. However, many hiring managers are looking because they have year-end budgets to spend before January. Or there are critical positions to be filled now.
More jobs out there
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 4.7 million open positions at the end of September. Unemployment rates have dipped to 5.8% nationally and most employment sectors are seeing a surge in growth. Not to mention, people are starting to move, which creates more open positions to fill.
Make hay while others play
Because most people assume companies slow down this time of year they put their job search on hold. Guess what, that means you have less competition. So, this is the time to go for it.
It’s time to get social
The Holidays provide more networking opportunities. And, networking during the Holiday Season can be a lot of fun and less stressful because people are more focused on family and giving, which takes the focus off of you. It may just lead to the right opportunity to talk casually about ‘what you do’. Be sure to have plenty of business cards on hand. This is a great way to tap the hidden job market.
